First Bath

A few days after Sloane was home I gathered the kids so we could all participate in Sloane's first sponge bath. The kids just die over their baby sister and love any opportunity to be with her or be part of her little life. They loved her first bath! That angel baby was absolutely calm during the entire bath and I fell in love with her even more. She was so cute and fluffy after her little bath! Sloane is just the best little baby babe.

Taking My Baby Home

I wasn't really ready to leave when the day came. I knew it was my last time in the hospital with a newborn and the finality of that nearly crushed me with sadness. In addition to that--I was having nursing problems, primarily due to engorgement and Sloane's poor latch. Leaving meant losing the support of the lactation nurses. Going home also meant the end to quiet moments with just Jamie and our Sloane. Post partum depression was solidified by this point and my emotions were dramatic and tender and I was constantly tearful. I was still capable of joy and watching my mom dress Sloane in the going home outfit that my sister, myself and Maeve wore was such a wonderful experience. Sloane was so much smaller than Maeve and she was much more emotional about changing into her outfit than Maeve! She especially protested the adorable going home outfit that I got for her. My mom did a great job handling her tiny, squishy limbs. Oh, my sweet little baby babe.

My final hour at the hospital was spent with the nurse going over my discharge orders. I started to cry before she left because I wanted that time to just be alone with my baby and that precious time seemed like such a waste. Even though my body felt wrecked and my emotions were wild, I wondered how I would ever live without another newborn again?

I cried on the drive home and I cried when we got home--mostly because watching Asher, Soren and Maeve excitedly gather around Sloane in her car seat and hold her little hands was absolutely rewarding. I was happy to be home--mangled emotions and all.

Dr. Tchabo

Dr. Tchabo came to check on my when I was alone in the room with just Sloane. I was actually walking around--trying to get used to my recovering body. I proudly handed Sloane to him and said she was really sweet. He replied that the "Apple does not fall far from the tree. Only sweet mommies get sweet babies." He asked how I was doing and when I wanted to go home. He would have let me stay as long as I wanted because he understood that once I left the hospital--the responsibility of life would hit me hard.

I have such a tenderness for this incredible man. I have loved having babies with him! He supported me through my difficult twin pregnancy and delivered all of my children. He wiped away my postpartum tears, held my hand and always had the precise words to help me feel better. I don't think I have ever met a more positive and happy person and I'm immensely grateful that he has been a part of my life--arguable one of the most powerful and important--the mothering part of my life.

I saw Dr. Tchabo again two weeks after Sloane was born and as with Maeve, I started to cry as soon as he walked into the room. We talked about how I felt and he knew just what to say. My mom was leaving the next day and Jamie had come down with a disgusting case of hand, foot and mouth disease and was in terrible shape. He could not go anywhere near our baby, which meant I was losing my mom and practically my husband at the same time. Sloane was not gaining weight and that almost destroyed me.

Dr. Tchabo held my hand and wiped my tears and told me to 'activate my community' and ask my friends to help! He said where he came from, when the baby was born the community came to you but we have such a different experience here in the DC area. He's right. I felt better after talking to him--I always do. Dr. Tchabo called me later that evening and left a message. He wanted to make sure I was doing okay and that meant everything to me.

Newborn Angles

Sweet, sweet Sloane. These photos do not do her justice! She looks much bigger than she actually was in person. I just adored her tiny little body and features and was so happy to have her.
